Guided or on your own at the Alhambra? An honest comparison
You can visit the Alhambra without a guide, and plenty of people do it well. The case for a guide here is narrower and stronger than at most monuments, and it rests on two things that have nothing to do with queue-jumping.

The case for a guide
Two reasons, and neither is the queue
The walls are text. And the tickets are scarce.
The walls are writing. This is the argument, and it is a strong one. The Nasrid Palaces are covered in carved Arabic: Quranic verse, court poetry by Ibn Zamrak written in the voice of the objects it decorates, and the dynastic motto repeated thousands of times. Without someone to read it, it is beautiful pattern. With someone to read it, it is a building making an argument about power and God, in sentences, at enormous length. Very few monuments change this much with explanation.
The ticket. The Alhambra caps daily numbers and releases timed Nasrid slots in batches that disappear within hours in spring and autumn. Operators hold allocations. Booking a guided tour is frequently the only way to get in at all at three weeks’ notice, and it is almost always the only way to get a slot at a time that suits you.
There is a third, smaller reason: the guide manages the timed entry, and missing it is unrecoverable.
The case for going alone
Three situations where it is the better choice
Second visits, long visits, and people who already hold a ticket.
You have been before. A second visit does not need the narrative. Wandering the Partal gardens at your own speed with no group to rejoin is one of the pleasures of Granada, and the audio guide fills any gaps.
You want longer than three hours. A guided tour is three hours and ends. Alone you can spend five without repeating yourself, subject only to your Nasrid slot and the closing time. For photographers and for anyone who reads every label, this matters.
You booked a ticket months ago. If you already have a general ticket with a Nasrid slot in hand, the main practical argument for a tour has gone. Consider hiring an accredited guide for the palaces alone rather than buying a whole package.
