The honest case for and against a day trip
It works. It is also the longest day of most people’s holiday.
A day trip works. A night in Granada works better, for the price of one hotel room.
For. Three hours each way on good roads, frequent direct buses, and you sleep in the same bed both nights. If Seville is your base and Granada is the only other thing you want to see in Andalusia, a day trip removes all the packing and the hotel-changing from the equation. Tens of thousands of people do it every year and come home happy.
Against. Six hours of travel for a three-hour tour is a poor ratio, and it is front-loaded with risk: a fixed entry time at the far end of a three-hour journey means any delay is a real problem rather than an inconvenience. And you will see the Alhambra and nothing else — not the Albaicín, not the cathedral, not the evening, which is when Granada is at its best.
The middle path, and the one worth considering: one night in Granada. Travel in the afternoon, walk the Albaicín at dusk for the view of the Alhambra lit up from across the valley, take a morning tour and travel back after lunch. The extra cost is one hotel night and it converts a hard day into an easy two.

Five decisions that make it manageable
Afternoon slot, take the bus, eat in Granada, and do one thing.
Book an early-afternoon Nasrid slot. Not the morning. A 08:30 entry means leaving Seville at five, and an afternoon slot lets you travel in daylight with slack in hand.
Take the bus, not the train. The bus is direct, frequent and about as fast, and there are far more departures to choose from if something goes wrong.
Do not drive if you can avoid it. Three hours each way and then a hill with limited parking, at the end of a long day. The bus lets somebody else do it.
Eat in Granada, not on the road. There is very little between the two cities and Granada is one of the last cities in Spain where a drink still comes with a free tapa.
Accept that the Alhambra is the day. Do not try to add the cathedral or the Albaicín. You will be rushing something that deserves not to be rushed.
