Alhambra guided tours in English: how to be sure, and how the headsets work

A bilingual tour runs in two languages, usually Spanish and English, with the guide delivering each explanation twice. On paper it is the same tour. In practice it halves the amount you hear per hour, and in a three-hour visit with a fixed Nasrid slot, there is no spare time to make up.

It also produces a particular kind of tedium: standing in a room listening to a language you do not speak while everybody else listens attentively, then hearing the same thing when your turn comes. In the Court of the Lions on a July afternoon that is not nothing.

Bilingual tours are usually cheaper for exactly this reason, and they are a perfectly reasonable choice if the price difference matters to you. But it should be a choice rather than a surprise, and the listing does not always make it obvious. Look for the words “English-speaking guide” or an explicit English departure time rather than “English available”.

Guides inside the Alhambra are not permitted to raise their voices. It is a rule of the monument, enforced by staff, and it exists because thirty guides all projecting in stone rooms would make the place unusable.

The consequence is that almost every group tour issues radio headsets: a small receiver and an earpiece, with the guide speaking quietly into a microphone. It works well, and it means a group of thirty can hear a guide who is two rooms ahead.

What it does not fix is seeing. You can hear a description of a ceiling perfectly while being unable to see the ceiling, which is the real limitation of a large group in small rooms and the reason capped groups cost more.

Take the headset even if you think you will not need it. Without one, in a normal group, you will catch perhaps half the tour and most of it from behind somebody else.
