How to build the day
Backwards from the slot, not forwards from the coast
The slot decides everything. Pick a later one and the day becomes easy.
Every other day trip from the Costa del Sol works the same way: leave when you like, arrive when you arrive. The Alhambra does not, and this catches people who have done a dozen excursions on that coast without trouble.
Your ticket carries a half-hour window for the Nasrid Palaces. Miss it and you do not go in, with no refund. So the day is planned in reverse: the slot decides the tour time, the tour time decides when you must be in Granada, and that decides when you leave the coast.
The practical consequence: do not book the earliest slot if you are coming from Málaga under your own steam. An 08:30 Nasrid entry means being in Granada by eight, which means leaving the coast before six. A midday or early-afternoon slot turns the same day into a civilised one, and gives you slack if the road or the train misbehaves.
Allow at least forty-five minutes in Granada between arriving and the tour meeting point: parking near the Alhambra is limited and the minibus up the hill takes fifteen to twenty minutes from the centre.
Getting there
Three ways, and what each costs you in slack
Car, train or bus. And an hour of slack you are willing to lose.
By car. Two hours on good motorway, and the flexibility to leave when you want. The complication is at the other end: the Alhambra car park fills and the roads up the hill back up on busy mornings. Park in the city and take the minibus instead of driving up.
By train. An hour and a half on the fast services, and the most relaxing option. Granada station is about twenty-five minutes from the Alhambra by bus. Book ahead: there are only a handful of services a day.
By bus. Around two hours, frequent, and much cheaper than the train. The bus station is a little further out than the railway station but the connection is straightforward.
Whichever you take, build in an hour of slack you are prepared to waste. An enforced entry time at the far end of a two-hour journey is not the place to be optimistic.
