Six of the fifteen tours on this site are private, and they run from a hundred and forty-eight dollars to over three hundred. It is worth being precise about what that money buys, because the honest answer is narrower than the listings suggest — and more valuable than it sounds.

What a private guide actually changes
Three things, and they are not the ones in the marketing
Questions, sightlines and pace. Not access.
You can ask. This is the whole product. In a standard group the guide is delivering a prepared three-hour narrative to thirty people through headsets, on a clock, and there is no room for a conversation. Privately you can stop in front of an inscription and ask what it says, or why that arch is shaped like that, and get an answer from somebody who spent years qualifying to give it.
You can stand where they are pointing. In the Nasrid Palaces the rooms are small and the interesting things are often overhead or in a corner. With two or four people you all see the thing being described. With thirty, most of the group sees the back of the group.
You can go at your own speed inside the window. Not longer — the slot is the slot — but you can spend fifteen minutes in the Court of the Lions and five in the Mexuar if that is what you want, rather than the reverse.
What it does not change: which rooms you enter, when you enter the palaces, how long the whole thing takes, or whether you can photograph anything. Anyone implying otherwise is overselling.

A private tour at $148 looks like several times the price of a group tour at $57. For one person it is. For four it is not.
Most private listings here are priced per group rather than per person up to a certain size. A family of four splitting $148 is paying roughly what each of them would pay for a small-group tour, and getting a guide entirely to themselves.
That is the case for booking one, and it is the only honest case. For a couple the sums are less favourable and a small-group tour at $66 usually gives you most of the benefit for much less. For a solo traveller a private guide is a luxury rather than a value proposition, and there is no shame in saying so.

Is a private tour of the Alhambra worth it?
For a party of three or four, often yes: divided by heads it costs about what a small-group tour does and the guide is entirely yours. For one or two people, a capped group tour usually gives most of the benefit for much less.
Does a private guide get you in earlier?
No. The Nasrid Palaces slot is assigned by the Alhambra and is the same for everyone. A private guide changes the pace inside the visit, not the timing of it.
What is the difference between private and small group?
A small group caps numbers, usually around a dozen. A private tour is your party alone. Both solve the main problem — being able to hear and see — and the small group solves it for much less.
