The Alhambra at night: a different ticket, and a much shorter route

The Alhambra opens for evening visits on selected nights, and the ticket is a different product from the day one. It admits you to either the Nasrid Palaces or the Generalife — which of the two depends on the night — and it does not include the Alcazaba at all.

The route through the palaces is also shorter than the daytime one. Some rooms are closed in the evening and the circulation is simplified, partly for staffing and partly because lighting the whole complex to a safe standard is neither practical nor desirable.

What you get in exchange is the thing nobody can sell you in daylight: the carved rooms lit from below, with a few dozen people in them instead of several thousand. The muqarnas in the Hall of the Abencerrajes was designed for exactly this kind of light, and the Court of the Lions at night is a genuinely different object from the Court of the Lions at eleven in the morning.

The gardens, by contrast, are largely unlit and that is deliberate. A night visit to the Generalife is an atmosphere rather than a sightseeing exercise.

Do not make a night visit your only visit. You will see a fraction of the complex, no Alcazaba, no view over Granada, and the gardens in the dark. People who book it as their single Alhambra experience are almost always disappointed, and it is the commonest complaint about night tickets.

Do consider it as a second visit, on a trip where you already have a day tour booked. Seeing the same rooms twice, once explained and once nearly empty, is a genuinely good use of two evenings in Granada — and the contrast is the point.

Practical notes: it is colder than you expect on the hill after dark, even in summer. Photography is difficult and tripods are refused. And the walk back down is unlit in places, so plan the return rather than improvising it.
